  • Log slice
  • Cord
  • Power screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Power sander

If you're into the rustic decor and wanna have unique decorative pieces in your house, this floating shelf made with log slices is perfect for you. You can use this hanging shelf next to your bed as a nightstand, in your living room as a side table, or even just as a plant hanger. You can buy pre-sanded wooden slices on Amazon or you can cut your own. Depending on the purpose of the hanging rope shelf, choose a thicker cord to hold it if you plan on hanging heavy objects.

2 hoursDifficultyEasy

Step 1: Gather the materials

If you buy pre-sanded wood tree slices you won't need the electric sander. The thickness of the cord or rope will depend on what you plan on hanging. And the size of the drill will depend on the thickness of the cord.

Step 2: Sand the log slices

When I cut the wooden slices they got uneven so I'll try to level it by sanding the wood. So I'll start with a small grit and finish it off with larger grit sandpaper.

Step 3: Mark the holes

To find out the best spots to drill the holes of your hanging shelf, try finding the middle of the log slice and draw a line going from one side to the other. Then, draw another line perpendicular to the first one, making sure they cross in the middle of the wooden slice. On each line, draw the mark about 2 cm from the edges.

Step 4: Drill the holes

Choose a wood drill to make the holes large enough to fit the cord. Drill the log slice on the marks you've done before. If you're afraid the wood log will crack, you can start drilling with a smaller drill and enlarge the hole.

Step 5: Cut the cord

Cut two strands of the cord that you're going to hang your shelf on. The size of each cord should be double the distance you want your floating shelf to hang from the ceiling.

Step 6: Make a loop

Gather the two strands and fold them in half and make a knot to create a loop. This loop is what's going to hang the shelf on the hook of your ceiling.

Step 7: Insert the cord into the log slice

Get each end of your cord and insert it into a hole on your wooden slice. To keep them in place, tie a knot underneath. Hang the floating shelf while doing it to make sure it's leveled.

Step 8: Final result of the wooden slice hanging shelf

Hang the floating shelf on a hook at the ceiling and your log slice shelf is ready! Enjoy.
