Your pets can get really uncomfortable and even stop eating if there are ants inside their food bowl, which is 100% understandable and there's an easy way to get rid of ants without using pesticides. In this DIY I'll show how to keep ants out of dog food bowl (or cats) using a simple cleaning trick. To get rid of ants in the house you can check this DIY: Cleaning Tips: 4 Easy Ways To Get Rid Of Ants, but if the problem is only in the pet food bowl, then check the tutorial below. Keep in mind that you should also keep your pet food bowl, clean. So at least once a week, remove all the food and clean the bowl.
Step 1: Materials needed
You'll need the pet food bowl, a pot rack to place the bowl on top and far from the ground, and a shallow bowl that should be large enough to fit the pot rack inside it. I'm actually using the lid of another bowl. You can use a plate as well, but I don't recommend using something that can break like glass or porcelain. Especially if you have clumsy pets.
Step 2: Fill the shallow bow with water
Fill the shallow bowl with water. The water will work as a barrier to keep the ants out of the bowl because they can't swim. However, some ants are pretty smart and might "build a bridge" holding each other to get to the bowl. If that happens, add a bay leaf and some cloves to the water. The smell of them will repel the ants and won't affect your pets.
Step 3: Place pot rack inside the water
Inside the shallow bowl with water, place the pot rack. The pot rack should be surrounded by water and it shouldn't touch the border of the bowl.
Step 4: Put the pet food bowl on the top
On the top of the pot rack put your pet food bowl. The height will not only help to keep ants out of the food bowl, it's also better for your pet so their digestive system doesn't get pressed while they're eating. From time to time change the water so it doesn't form mold on the surface and make sure the bowl is full because your pet might want to drink it.
