Roman philosopher Cicero believed, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Your needs may be a little greater than that, but if you are a avid book lover and collector you will not be able to see your collection perish due to a lack of care.

A well organised bookcase adds to the beauty of your home. It is crucial for maintaining a dust free and healthy interior environment as well. Let’s find out some simple ways to edit your bookshelves in style…

Invest in a quality bookshelf

Rusty metal or rotten wood can damage your precious books. Investing in a quality bookcase or built in bookshelves should be a top priority. This may sound elementary but it is essential to maintain the health of your collection. Bespoke built in shelves help to make optimal use of the available space and keep your interior decluttered.

Shelves with sliding doors are highly recommended for those homes located in the highly polluted parts of a city. They prevent dust accumulation inside the case. It is quite possible that your old bookshelves are not in need of an upgrade. Use periodic varnish or paint to keep it in tip-top condition.

Clean and place the books

Dust off your books and reorganise them on the shelves. If you have a large collection, you may like to arrange them in an alphabetical order or segregate them according to subject.

Many book lovers like following a library-like order and also maintain a mini register of their books. This comes in handy when friends come borrowing your books and sometimes forget to return them in time! You may simply keep a mental note of the way you arranged your books so that they don't get messed up.

Introduce decorative elements

Small decorative features can increase the charm of the bookcase itself as well as the space it inhabits. Tiny sculptural pieces, artworks, curious looking shells, ceramics, candles, framed photographs or posters can be used to decorate the bookcase.

Use only a handful of items and do not clutter the shelves with these pieces. Do not keep any of these pieces in front the books you frequently take out to read.

Install led lighting

This is a relatively new feature which can glam up your bookshelves. Hidden LED lighting can keep the interior of your bookshelf bright as well.

Features like these can make your living room or study very much in tune with time. Alternatively, you can place small table lamps inside and light it up to bring in a magical effect.

Introduce greenery

Green plants can keep your interior environment clean and also beautify the space with their presence. Decorate your bookshelves with a few potted plants. Bring in those that do not require frequent watering. Do not keep pots with leaking water on the shelves. Use a tray underneath to ensure that the books do not get damaged in their presence.

Use mothballs and other organic pesticides to keep your plants as well as your books secure from the pest attacks. Bookshelves do not need frequent cleaning up. So you would have weeks in hand before engaging in another cleaning activity like this. Meanwhile, cuddle up in your favourite chair with a book in hand and enjoy spending time in a delightful way.
