Text and typography can be used in so many innovative ways in interiors. With its potential to be visually striking if presented in a pleasing font it can also convey messages that uplift, motivate and remind us of what is important to us. Words and letters have power and can shape our everyday experience in the most positive of ways if we find those that resonate with us. From wall hung prints in the bedroom to sculptural light fittings in living spaces here are some inspiring examples. See which ones speak to you.

Wake Up to a Positive Message.

What better way to wake up than to a room full of beautiful words combined with images that inspire us. Here is a print next to a bed saying Do More Of What You Love. The combination of blocks of colour, prints, texture and words is perfectly balanced. What is there not to love?

Wild Type.

An unusual application here where letters and a number in bold capital typeface are applied to cups re-appropriated in some cases as vases and onto plates which become wall hangings. Scale and distance is intelligently applied to create a layered effect and the overall look and feel is fresh, clean and natural. Colour comes though in the vibrant green of the plants and cactuses and the warm strip of teak or rosewood which is the bed base. The white and light grey walls act as a canvas and backdrop for the plants and letters. The letters appear to loosely spell the word 'jungle' and indeed the beginnings of an urban interior jungle are underway here!

Don't Forget Your Toothbrush!

Here bold black type is applied to wall mounted cups for storing toothbrushes.  Overall a monochromatic scheme references classic black typeface on white lined paper. A wonderful idea for a family or group of people cohabiting where each person can have their initial on a cup, bringing some order into the bathroom.

Lets Go Outside.

Here the alphabet is stencilled onto a white wall in the entrance hall of a house. Monochrome is the colour scheme throughout not only with the feature wall graphic but with other accessories and framed artwork in the space. Themes from nature are explored in the graphics with flower stems, branches and leaves creating a highly individual and delicate font. Below the artwork you have a pair of wellington boots and walking shoes, all set to explore the great outdoors.

Location!

Very unusual tiles here spell out the name of a sought after location in London. The overall aesthetic is clean and also industrial with metal finishes and exposed pipework. The font has a metallic mesh graphic and is modular thereby connecting one letter to another. Graphic tiles like this would look good especially in a kitchen, which this appears to be. These tiles could also look fabulous in a bathroom.

Mark Your Territory.

There are many wall vinyls available on the market now and indeed highly individual ones such as this one spelling the name Max.  A work area should certainly be yours and yours alone so why not mark your territory! Here the workspace is fun and unique combining this playful wall vinyl with a retro typewriter and a metallic vase full of colourful flowers.

Work Place Motivation.

Strategically placed motivational text can really help us especially in an office or work area. This is a part of the house where more than anywhere we want to maintain focus and inspiration as much as we can. Here a lovely clean aesthetic is achieved with painted timber floorboards, a minimal white work bench, pine chair and then a focal point which is the print. Rather than hang on the wall it leans casually against it asserting that first we must learn rules to then break them.

X Marks the Spot.

X Marks the Spot.

Here a warm wintry scene is created with the focal feature being a lit up letter X.  Reclaimed signage and fairground lighting is and has been on-trend for a little while now and rightly so. This is as much a great light fitting as it is a sculptural artwork with its distressed metal finish and series of  filament lightbulbs. You can personalise your space with the initial of your name if you like or just choose a letter that has special meaning for you for example the initial of a loved one. Join a few letters together and display words that hold special meaning. So many bright ideas to play with!

Favourite Words.

Favourite Words.

Why choose a favourite quote or poem when you can collect them all and frame them creating a collage as is shown here. Never again feel uninspired with a wall like this. In this room even the rug has uplifting words woven into it in a subtle and tasteful way. The contrasting typefaces and sizes of font intersperced with graphic prints create a visually interesting ensemble. The subtle soft tones of white oiled oak and chalky whites and greys offer a perfect backdrop and really allow the printed messages to pop.
