The ultimate storage space can be under your stairs

In a lot of homes, the area under the stairs is a place which is either unused, or has a small cupboard underneath which is packed with different bits and bobs that are difficult to access. 

In order to optimise this space, you can create an incredibly organised storage area by installing a variety of drawers and cupboards that can be closed and will blend in with the stairs. This transforms the area into a handy place for easy access and storage. For example the drawers can be used to store kids’ shoes, or for hats and scarves, as well as other items that you would like to tuck away. Don't underestimate the space under the stairs!

Use the space under your bed for storage

Using the space under your bed is a great place for storage. Choosing a bed with built in storage is a good way of maximising the space that you have. It's the ideal place for keeping bedding or towels, or if you have a lot of clothes that won't all fit in your wardrobe, it’s the perfect place for packing away your summer or winter clothes.

If your bed doesn't have built in storage but there is space underneath it, you can simply measure the height of the bed to the floor and buy under bed storage boxes or drawers that will fit nicely underneath. If you're really stuck for space, you can also try using vacuum packed bags as they are nice and compact for fitting into small spaces.

No room for a home office? Why not use the space under the stairs?!

While the space under the stairs can be used to fit a storage unit, there are others ways of making use of the area. Not everyone has a room which they can use as a home office or work-space, so why not optimise the space that you have? 

The area beneath the staircase is often neglected for fear of it becoming a haven for clutter and disorder, however, adding a desk and chair to this space doesn't have to mean chaos. You can maintain a clutter free area and keep it simple yet functional, by utilising and optimising the space that you have. 

As part of the desk, you can build some internal storage space at the side, which is the perfect way to keep the area tidy and to give you space for your computer and small essentials. Add a small lamp to the desk to brighten up the area!

If you have a space between your kitchen unit and wall, you might be wondering what to do with it. You could fill this space by placing your bin there, but why not take advantage of the space so that you have more storage. You can build a unit of shelves to perfectly fill the empty space, and also give you more room in your kitchen. 

Adding a shelving unit will make the ideal spot in your kitchen for storing your beloved cooking books and displaying your favourite teapot or tea set. You can decide on the height of the shelves so that if you have any food items such as tall oil bottles or food storage tins that won't fit in your kitchen cabinets, you can store them on your new shelves.  

Bay window storage

A bay window can really brighten up a room as it allows a lot of natural light in. However, sometimes it may be tricky to fill the space due its shape. Depending on its size, some people may use the space as a place to fit an armchair, but this may not work for everyone, which is why it's a great idea to use the space for storage. 

You can build a unit that is ideal for storing children's toys, magazines, or cables and electronics. In addition to functioning as a storage space, it can also serve as an extra seat if you place a nice blanket and some cushions on top.
