Vintage kitchens were an amazing entity—they tended to be small, yet as home-cooked meals and larger families were more popular in decades past, it's amazing that they have withstood the test of time.

Now, small home owners are turning to vintage furnishings, accessories and even appliances being offered on the market for both their durability and smaller sizes. Below, we have several kitchens that prove that vintage is here to stay, both by use of vintage time-capsule appliance collections and plenty of storage space!

1. Florals

Although a small home would probably have a smaller kitchen than this one specifically, we love the idea of vintage floral wallpaper and matching vintage furnishings to match to create a small, cosy kitchen!

It's most cost effective and fun to refurbish and renovate any vintage furnishings your night have to include them in your small kitchen design!

2. Upgrade appliances to match a vintage look

Stainless steel appliances look great with almost any cabinetry you might choose—it white is definitely a favoured for a vintage, cottage feel.

3. Patterned tiles

These blue and yellow patterned tiles are super and combined with the white cabinetry give the feel of a perfect 1940s or 50s kitchen setting. Check out this cheery apartment with vintage accents for more inspiration!

4. Light blues are always a good choice

For whatever reason it seems that vintage and retro spaces—particularly those trying to look fresh and minimal—try to stick with light blues and whites as the main colours. The blue backsplash here is offset with the blue dining room chair and oversized hanging lamp.

5. Accessories!

To nail a retro or vintage look in your kitchen, make sure to pay special attention to the accessories! Matching vintage tea sets and dish sets are just the beginning. Look at cushions, reading material, plates (as seen here for the wall) and antique frames to really pull everything together.

6. Here we are again with the light blue!

If you're looking for a more modern vintage look, then try light blue cabinets paired with light wood worktops. This feels both vintage and Scandinavian!

7. Classic appliances

Frigidaire and other companies have recognised the rise in popularity of vintage and antique appliances and have released time capsule collections to make these pieces available again. Even in a modern kitchen, a retro fridge can make everything instantly vintage!

8. Light fixtures to change it up

A small home usually means a small kitchen, but it surely doesn't have to mean standard lighting. A kitchen needs excellent lighting and for a smaller home you should choose one to three smaller-sized light fixtures in order to make a statement!

9. Rustic can bring out the retro

This small kitchen has just about everything you need, and with some great and interesting design! The rustic cabinets and worktop age the space, but not in a bad way. All the accessories—exposed shelving, matching plates and cute greenery add to the appeal!

10. Renovate your old, small home to a modern vintage glory

This kitchen has been renovated from its 1930s style to fir a more modern lifestyle. Yet the detailed wood flooring and more traditional black appliances still let hints of the vintage life show through.

11. Don't forget to add some colour!

In your journey of attempting to make your kitchen vintage, don't forget that stained glass windows were popular in decades past and were a quick and easy way to add both colour and decor to a kitchen without infringing upon the function.

12. Expose it all

This kitchen has mixed so much together, yet it works in an effortlessly perfect way. The exposed stone walls and ceiling beams are great for the white cabinets and the pops of colour are provided through the patterned tile floor and the white and dark wood beams.

13. Don't forget the dishes and serving platters

A cosy home lay in the details, and there is perhaps nothing prettier and more dainty than vintage-inspired or authentic vintage plate sets and serving platters. Do some research, hunt through your local flea markets and think about ways to make entertaining an art form in your small home!

14. Designate a separate bar area for late-night drinks and entertaining

One difficult aspect of small kitchens is their lack of entertaining space. During the 1950s and 60s, there would be a designated area for after-dinner drinks or late-night drinks with neighbors and friends. This would normally include several, beautiful crystal decanters, low-ball glasses and a vintage bar cart Pick an area of your small home—preferably one of those pesky corners that you don't know what to do with, and create you own adult area for entertaining friends and family!

We hope these vintage kitchens have inspired you to find solace and beauty in your small home! If you liked this article, check out: 6 essential things to do to get a minimalist home.
