In theory, the dining room should be one of the easiest rooms to decorate. When one thinks about dining room furniture, a table and a set of chairs immediately comes to mind. Unfortunately, in recent years, homeowners on a budget have sacrificed the dining room in favour of open plan living rooms and kitchens—either abandoning it all together or merging the two areas together as one. It is indeed a crying shame to lose such a space. The dining room single-handedly brings family and friends together for a myriad of different events and situations. Whether it is to raise a glass to the new year, or reflect on a solemn situation, the dining room facilitates all of these activities in a private and intimate setting.

Today on homify, we are going to take a look at some wonderful examples of dining room table and chairs. Below, you are sure to find an example that will either change your initial thought processes, or help you to articulate to your designer exactly what you are after. Take a look…

Mix & match

Nowadays, there are no rules governing the selection of our dining room chairs. No longer are we required to choose a matching set; each can be different from the next if desired! In the pictured example by DOS Architects, we see a wonderful fusion of wooden chairs styled to create a varied, yet uniform effect. In direct contrast with the simple white table, the chairs add an elegant rustic charm to the space, creating a juxtaposition between the different elements of furniture in the room. Furthermore, the scattered table decorations add pizazz and a welcome pop of colour to a fairly neutral and muted space.

Serene tones

For a more casual experience, this dining room table, which features teak mid-century modern chairs, creates a more laid back ambience. It's true—the dining room need not be a formal affair. In fact, it is open to as much interpretation as you see fit. The tones employed in this space are reminiscent of the sea, with gentle shades of blue and white coming together to recreate a seaside holiday. Brown + Brown Architects have successfully merged contemporary creature comforts in a unique and relaxed setting.

Neat & petite

Just because you are short on space, doesn't mean you need to sacrifice on style. A round table is a great option as the lack of corners provide not only an intimate dining ambience, but also help to make the best use of available space. Made popular in the tales of King Arthur, a round table creates an equal playing field in terms of conversation hierarchy, due to the inward facing position of the seating. In terms of decorating, Lisette Voûte Designs has chosen a subtle tartan pattern for the chairs, adding a touch of old-world country charm. Smaller details, such as the copper lantern and decorated lampshades, further conveys a vibe of elegance and class.

Shabby chic

Shabby chic is one of the hottest and most coveted decorating trends for 2015, so take note of how Prestigious has masterfully recreated this  graceful dining room scene. For something different, stools have been used instead of high back chairs, encouraging table guests to lean forward and interact with the others. Every detail has been masterfully configured to match the theme; from the delicate chair grey covers to the worn looking table and chest of drawers. Remember, it's the small details that count in the long run!

Marble marvels

To finish, Keir Townsend breaks all the rules with this incredible marble table and black leather armchair set. Solid pieces of marble furniture are no longer limited only to the bathroom or kitchen! Just like the pictured example, a marble table can be the undeniable focal point of a space. This entire scene is bold and luxurious, employing all the standard features of a dining room, but with a massive point of difference—each element is finished in the finest material textures. As each piece of stone is unique in vein, your marble dining room table will be one of a kind and sure to set tongues wagging!
