Behind the design of contemporary home art and design pieces comes a lot of thought and preparation, however the final design philosophy for a lot of contemporary pieces (as we are about to see) states, in many respects, that, in the end, you should be left with a form that even a child could theorise; a simple but beautiful object that stands out as prominent in the overall design of a room, garden or other area. The reality, of course, is very different to the philosophy and there is indeed a tremendous amount of hard work behind some of our favourite contemporary and modern designs.
To review a commonplace object is easy enough by our selves -give criticism, praise, indifference. But sometimes it’s difficult to view things in a new perspective and this is why, today, were showing a collection of modern designs that you may either love or hate.
404 design not only sees an object for a design, they create a spatially aware design based around the concept of sharing. ALOP (a lot of pillows) is a design that incorporates a set of large pillows within a small storage unit that is also a table. A great idea for when you have little space or simply too many friends round; providing extra comfort to your guests.
The frame of the piece is made of wood and the cushions are foldable to make different thicknesses of cushion. ALOP can either be used as an ottoman or a coffee table -when not in use- and (again) a coffee table or extra storage unit -for child's toys, for example, when not in use.
HOLE design studio gives us the basket chair: based around the form of a wicker basket and shaped and moulded to accommodate a regular sized one. The basket chair, a chair that welcomes us like a safety basket; giving us a bit of comfort and modern style at the same time. The best thing about the design is its versatility though: with additional padding to turn into an armchair, weatherproofing without and, of course, for indoor use. The mix of the fabric and plastic too makes for interesting results, like the colour is running down the chair.
