Over in the hills of southern Germany is a rather unexpected and individual holidaying experience that more and more across Europe are offing as an alternative getaway. In this case, we find ourselves at the Rhein valley, in the black forest, with a picturesque view of both undisturbed nature and the river itself.

Atop this vineyard sits two 8000 litre wine barrels, that have been turned into accommodation for those seeking something a little more than a hotel room…

In vino veritas

Each of these heated barrels once held a whole villages supply of wine, nowadays it can support two people, a pair of lovers perhaps, for short vacations and a wonderful time of rustic and memorable charm

Above the clouds

Located some 350m up on the hillside of the vineyard, sit our makeshift chalets. There are a few sets on the farm land in the area of Sasbachwalden, where we are now, and each set is host to one sleeping barrel and one WC and shower barrel. The positioning of the barrels is aimed at providing the best views to those inside; always giving a western, river and sunset view.

A romantic get away

So there we have it, a romantic get away, in the foothills of the black forest, set inside a wine barrel -well, two wine barrels!
