Over in the hills of southern Germany is a rather unexpected and individual holidaying experience that more and more across Europe are offing as an alternative getaway. In this case, we find ourselves at the Rhein valley, in the black forest, with a picturesque view of both undisturbed nature and the river itself.
Atop this vineyard sits two 8000 litre wine barrels, that have been turned into accommodation for those seeking something a little more than a hotel room…
Each of these heated barrels once held a whole villages supply of wine, nowadays it can support two people, a pair of lovers perhaps, for short vacations and a wonderful time of rustic and memorable charm.
Located some 350m up on the hillside of the vineyard, sit our makeshift chalets. There are a few sets on the farm land in the area of Sasbachwalden, where we are now, and each set is host to one sleeping barrel and one WC and shower barrel. The positioning of the barrels is aimed at providing the best views to those inside; always giving a western, river and sunset view.
