In the summer, one of the most enjoyable pastimes is a barbecue with friends. Lunch or dinner, it makes little difference, the important thing is that you eat great food (hopefully not too overcooked!), drink a beer or two and come home feeling as if it’s just after Christmas dinner at the relatives.
Chops, ribs, burgers, sausages or chicken and plenty of veggies for grilling are essential in creating the basic barbecue and, should you wish to provide a little something extra, we've compiled this ideabook for you to draw some inspiration about presentation and going the extra mile.
Get those guests sat down and comfortable! This is important! Remember all the times you've been the guy standing around with a paper plate in your hand and having no ‘home ground’ for the duration of the event? It’s not so nice, is it! So, when you’re hosting, make sure no one is left in this position. If you’re inviting a good selection of friends over, organise some extra emergency seating, just in case. When this is sorted, then you can think about the table decorations.
If you have a swing, or something novelty in the garden, for your guests to use, before things kick off, which they surely keep them amused whilst you get things out on to the table or flip the burgers. Garden games, like lawn darts, will work a treat too!
If you're all about punctuality and getting things done on time, then a gas BBQ is probably something that would suit you down to a T. Control the heat with precision and always know what's going on with the grill!
For those who are all about taste then charcoal is the answer: sure, it takes longer and you have little control over the heat, but the flavouring and cooking properties of the fuel is regarded by most as the grill Meister's choice!
A workman always worked better with better tools, and so can you; with good barbecuing utensils. A wire brush, spatula, animal hair brush and skewers will set you in the right direction, and then there are more exact utensils like a fish or sausage turner! The possibilities are many.
After the food has all been eaten, people shouldn't be ducking away. Let them know in advance that the party plans to go further and that more eventful activity will be going on afterwards -that is, if you want it to!
