There are a few items that we think any interior designer would agree you should have in your home, by your 30th birthday, and we're going to tell you what they are, right now! You want your house to be a home, but also a reflection of your maturity and development, so wouldn't it be great to have a prescriptive list of things that will absolutely demonstrate them both? Well you're in luck, as here it comes!

1. A really good bed.

Your bedroom needs to be a cosy sanctuary, but it also needs to be home to a good, solid and supportive bed. Forget flatpack furniture and flimsy items and think about investing in a solid wood version that will stand the test of time and be the focal point of the room.

2. A pet to look after and love.

Never mind spouses, what everybody needs, when they get to the grand old age of 30, is a pet to cherish and adore! Whether you go for something small and simple, like a gerbil, or large and fun, such as a dog, you have to be sure that you'll have enough time and money to care for them properly.

3. A proper desk chair.

We don't think 30 is old, but let's get down to brass tacks and accept that an ergonomic, adjustable desk chair is something you can't afford to skimp on! Foldable seating should be left in your 20s, unless of course you want to be crippled by the time you are middle-aged!

4. 'Forever' furniture and/or art.

Whether you choose a classic vintage sofa or perhaps an incredible piece of wall art, really treat yourself and your home to something that you know you'll keep forever! Just one item that you save up for and enjoy on a wonderfully basic level will really add character!

5. Cleaning products and usable tools.

We know that there was a time when a pack of antibacterial surface wipes were all you needed to carry out your cleaning routine, but as you get older, you know you need a well-stocked caddy of specific sprays and cloths! Not only that, you also need a multi-purpose tool kit as well!

6. A little disposable cash.

If for no other reason, you should always have a little money in your home so that you can pay any fast food delivery drivers that come to the door! You really don't ever know when you'll need a little stash of cash, so even if you can't afford to keep it in a safe, a little piggy bank will work just as well!

7. High-end bed linen.

You know the saying 'buy cheap, buy twice' isn't just an old housewife's tale, right? It definitely applies to bed linen as well, so instead of having 20 different sets of cheap bedding, how about investing in just a few, with a higher thread count and a silkier feel? Go on, you're 30 now, so you deserve the finer things in life!
