They say that change is as good as a holiday. True, but they also say that time is precious. So, how do we combine these two sayings to make one of the most visited rooms in any home (the bathroom, naturally) flaunt a fresh new look without wasting an entire weekend (or a whole day)?

This is a question that has been posed to us here at homify numerous times, so there’s definitely a market for beautiful and practical bathrooms (as any bathroom designer will agree).

But back to the problem at hand… First of all, clear out your entire bathroom space. We mean unpack those vanities, take off the window treatment, remove the soaps and shampoos from the tub and shower, everything!

Next, give your bathroom a proper cleaning. Dusting, mopping, washing, rinsing, whatever needs to get done to give your bathroom some shine, do it.

Now, how do we save time yet treat our bathrooms to some new pizzazz with quick-and-easy bathroom decor ideas? By scrolling down, of course…

1. Bathroom decor ideas: New lighting

Did you know that a Swedish study found that lighting, paired with the right colours, can affect one’s mood? And when you consider the fact that changing out a room’s lighting is not hard or costly, that makes number one on our list most fitting, don’t you agree?

Older lighting fixtures and fluorescent lighting cast unattractive shadows and odd colour hues on your skin. Not the best thing to see when looking into the bathroom mirror.

But if changing your bathroom lighting fixture is not possible, then upgrade those bulbs with  new LED bulbs in a warmer hue.

homify hint: Before you make any dramatic changes to your bathroom, think about how it will be used. Is it supposed to be a relaxing spa space? A changing room for the little ones? A room that’s supposed to help out with the house’s storage? Find out the intention of your bathroom and then design accordingly.

2. Bathroom decor ideas: Splash some paint

As far as bathroom decor ideas go, this one can be achieved in a simple afternoon. Splash a new, fresh colour onto those walls!

We recommend painting bright stripes below an existing dado rail (if you have one). Stick to a neutral colour for the rest of the wall to counteract the bright new hue.

3. Bathroom decor ideas: New storage

Picture this: a brand-new floating shelf (or standing cupboard with open cubby holes) flaunting wicker baskets and neatly folded towels. Instant practicality, colour and texture!

Allocate each member of your family their own basket of bathroom goodies.

homify hint: Give a small powder room or bathroom a larger look with a wall-mounted sink that frees up floor space.

4. Bathroom decor ideas: Hang up art

Who says colourful paint is your only option for bathroom beauty? Treated canvas prints are water resistant and affordable, so why not?

We propose oversized prints for striking visual impact. And for a look that will be 100% unique to your bathroom, have a local printer blow up a favourite photo into customised wall art.

homify hint: A wall gallery of prints and wall pieces in a specific theme (i.e. nautical, vintage farm, nature) can be a striking way to decorate bathroom walls.

5. Bathroom decor ideas: Upgraded hardware

Did you know that changing teeny, tiny hardware pieces in your bathroom can make a big difference? Drawer pulls, towel bars, even the toilet paper holder can ensure a new look!

Replacement is as simple as unscrewing or popping off the old hardware and adding a new one. To keep this project quick and easy, be sure you are replacing old hardware with similarly sized screw hole spacing, especially on bar style drawer pulls that require to screws. It’ll mean less holes to make (and hide) in the cabinets and walls.

6. Bathroom decor ideas: Accessories with personality

A beautiful look for your bathroom is one thing; a bathroom with personality is quite another. And you want both!

Some bathroom decor ideas that can instantly add character include:

• A new wastebasket and bathroom soap dish or soap pump;

• A silk floral or live plant (if you have natural light available). Orchids are especially great, since they love the humidity in a bright bathroom;

• Candles or room diffusers that add a nice scent to the space.

7. Bathroom decor ideas: Statement pieces that are practical

Continuing with the quest of bringing character into your bathroom, how about putting in a handsome display cabinet for holding towels and extra amenities like shampoo, soaps and toilet paper?

homify hint: What’s your windowsill up to? Nothing? Then have it display bath salts, bubble bath, and other bathroom necessities in pretty glassware. Decorative and practical!

8. Bathroom decor ideas: Upgrade your mirror

A mirror is easily one of the main centrepieces of a bathroom. So, to easily transform your bathroom space, change up the mirror!

A new frame can go a long way in bringing new colour, texture and style to a bathroom. Or how about switching out that dingy little piece for an oversized mirror to add more visual space and reflected lighting?

9. Bathroom decor ideas: New textiles

And speaking of new colour, don’t overlook the importance of your bathroom’s textiles.

Towels, bath mats, washcloths, shower curtains, window treatment, and even a new rug can all make a difference. If you have a specific colour you’re working with for your towels and floor mat, choose a patterned or printed shower curtain that contains some of those hues for a visual flow in your bathroom’s design.

homify hint: Don’t be scared to mix prints and textures in a small bathroom. But commit to a single colour when decorating a small bathroom with multiple prints and patterns.
