Using mismatched chairs

Looking for a way to give your home décor a slight twist? Mixing styles and colours of chairs can add a hint of eclecticism with surprisingly little clutter.  The pictures below show just how subtle and stylish this technique can be for a variety of different decorating styles. So if you're looking to add a bit of quirkiness to your home, give this trend a try!

Country charm

Here, a classic English cottage becomes a bit more trendy with the addition of mismatched chairs.  Although they differ in colour and style, the chairs share a rustic feel, which keeps them in line with the rest of the home.

A hint of colour

These dining chairs all share the same shape, which fits perfectly in this modern, Scandinavian-style home. But look at what a difference their mismatched colours create! By staying within the same green-gold family, the designer added a richness and texture to the room that would certainly have been missing if the chairs had all been exactly the same.

While some may be afraid to mix both colours and patterns, this gorgeous seating arrangement shows that the results can be magnetic.  The complexity of the fabrics keeps the look from becoming too childlike, while projecting a delightful whimsy.

A bit of yellow

Here, the yellow chair quickly draws your attention when placed within the dark, sophisticated palette of this room.  But, on a closer look, you see that this chair is the same style as the others at the table, and that the clean lines on these pieces are perfectly suited to the table, which looks so good against that wall… It's a case where a small detail holds the whole room together.

Mismatched twins

Although we often see mismatched chairs in the dining room, why not put them in a living area as well! Surrounded by interesting accessories, these complementary brown and white chairs look great and add to the room's eclectic style.

Subtle drama

This long table is surrounded by chairs that differ in colour, material and style--almost every way.  The effect, however, is far from chaotic. The large neutral room allows the unmatching chairs to lend a sense of drama to what might otherwise be a less-than-exciting space.

This large, glass room with a long table provides the perfect opportunity to play with mixing up colours.  The white walls let the chairs really stand out, making them the focal point of the house and garden and adding a huge splash of fun!
