Furniture for the living room: modern sofas

Everything is ready! The snacks were already prepared in the afternoon, and the drinks are cold enough to be removed from the refrigerator, where they have been icing up nicely! The popcorn is hot, and the rainy, cold weather is safely outside. This situation leads us solely and exclusively to our living room, and brings to mind two basic things that are essential for those winter nights that are coming: a good film and a cosy couch!

After a hard day at work, spent either in an office or in the house taking care of a thousand things—the children, the cat, the grocery shopping and the mother who calls us constantly on the phone to give advice, finally comes the long-awaited time after dinner. Here, we have only one desire: to feel wrapped up and pampered on the sofa.

Furnishing your living room is not a simple thing: there are different styles that you can follow, and an infinite number of combinations that can be used. It all depends on your taste, and the living room that you have in mind. In fact, this room can say a lot about you, more so than you can imagine. The space gives your guests an idea of what you do during your free time. A large library and no television? The occupants of this home are probably avid readers. A home theatre with a giant screen and surround sound? Definitely a fan of action movies. And what about the couch or chairs? Even these fundamental objects tell us a lot about someone's personalty and tastes. It cannot be denied, a good sofa completes a room.

What to choose? Definitely a style that is well-fitted to the home, something that is comfortable and of course, is also nice to look at. A classic style is always good, but if you are tired of the usual grey sofa, seen again and again in catalogues or magazines, then it is better to focus on something more refined, perhaps with a careful design and innovative materials. Upcycling? Why not! New forms never before seen? We have those too. If you want to surprise your friends and guests with something unusual, it's time to take notes, because homify have some great suggestions.

Before we start talking about sofas, we have to imagine the room in which they will be placed. Let's start with something classic. In this photo, the design is very simple, but still quite sought after. It is important to have a bookshelf, and the one on the left, with its uneven shelves, is something special. The armchair is a timeless piece, an item sought for its minimalist design and often lined in classic leather. Then, finally, the king of the living room: the sofa, accompanied by the inevitable coffee table and a beautiful, colourful carpet that makes you almost feel your feet are on the grass. The sofa is very low, with a structure that is not too showy. With just one look, we can guess how incredibly comfortable this object is.

Comfort reigns with a sofa that suits our ever-changing needs: the adjustable headrests are a valuable thing, providing the chance to pull up a pillow and stretch out. Falling asleep in front of the television has never been so easy. Regarding upholstery, leather may be the best material to warm our evenings during a hard winter. By using dark colours for the sofa, we help hide the spots and stains that we can not avoid accumulating during daily life. Darker shades are also elegant and never go out of fashion!

The designer Philip Mambretti has created a sofa with a special design, and in the not often seen shade of black. The shape of the Brooklyn is that of a classic L that invites you to relax and unwind. There are two large seats equipped with seat backs, one of which also has an armrest. Here we can stretch out our legs from their folded time in the office chair. This sofa is built for comfort but also for function; in fact, there are gaps under the sofa that will be filled with things like newspapers, magazines, board games or even extra pillows; perfect for grabbing a book or whatever you need for a quick nap after a big dinner with all the trimmings.

Industrial design—Doimo sofas -Metropolis

The design studio Imago Creative Design has come up with a solution similar to the previous one, but with a little variation. The Metropolis is a sectional sofa upholstered in leather, with metal feet. The figure is an L with a slight overhang. The backrests and cushions alternate, until you come to an empty space that is wisely used as a convenient coffee table: an all-in-one solution that is unique in its simplicity.

Are you looking for something light, youthful and practical? Cinque, a sofa designed by the group de.SMAG is a comfortable three-seater, compact and suitable for all small houses or for a young couple who have just bought their first home. The design is certainly minimalist, but it does not lack comfort, and the armrest has a small flat top where we can safely support what we are missing always in front of the television—the remote control!

And we have not told you something important! As can be seen in this photo, Cinque is designed to be assembled and installed quickly, without using any tools other than our hands. The pieces are very few, and most fit together perfectly to compose a sofa that is simple and good-looking at the same time.

Designers Stefania Murra Irene and Don Giovanni, introduce us to their idea of a living room. This project is summed up by large volume, a clean and simple design with unexpected surprises. Arranged as shown, OTA6 presents itself as an object of particular forms, that allow two people to lay comfortably while two others sit on the bench to the right. Wood, padding and quality then make the difference: the main structure is made of wood padded with polyurethane, while the other exposed surfaces are constructed of birch plywood with solid wood detailing.

What is the secret OTA6 then? In fact, it contains everything you could want in the living room. From this angle, we can appreciate how each piece has its own function. This system of different shapes that fit together perfectly and easily, allows you rearrange the piece, so that the room includes a double chaise lounge, a two-seater sofa and two chairs with a handy table in the centre.

If you are tired of the usual sofa or the classic idea of the living room, and instead, want to create a fun room in which to relax and maybe play with children, then, the Caterpillar may be the perfect choice. This sofa is inspired by straws and accordions and, in particular, their common ability to change their original shape without breaking—just like a caterpillar that can easily move every single part of its body.

Think differently

The advantage of moving in every possible direction allows you to transform this object into a chair, a bench, a sofa or even a comfortable bed for a nap. Caterpillar surprised not only us here at homify: it was also rewarded with a 3rd place at Copenhagen City Hall. The materials are simple and include fabrics, ropes and tools that are usually used for climbing.

Do you know how it feels when you have that nice warm feeling, and a sense of security all at the same time? Odú, an object of design that combines style and comfort, is built to give this cosy feeling. It consists of a hard outer shell that houses a smooth soft interior cushion, offering the best comfort possible. A series of individual seats like this can very easily replace a sofa for two.

Pallets, pallets, pallets

Pallet: the term on everyone's lips. Lately we are seeing more and more pieces made from upcycling this utilitarian item. Here, Recycle Eco-Design shows us how brilliantly you can convert a number of pallets that were abandoned to their fate near some warehouse into pop-art inspired armchairs or sofas. The perfect way to make the living room stay alive, fresh and dynamic.

If you have a large group of guests, the Baxter, a sofa with a leather cover, should be able to accommodate them all! The craftsmanship of skilled expert tanners has enabled the design of an object like this. The ways to take advantage of these multiple pieces are varied. It is a series that gives a strong character and one-of-a-kind style to the furniture in any living room.
