We all know that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but it’s easier said than done – especially when it comes to viewing properties. After all, when you see a house’s exterior with peeling paint, overgrown garden and just a general ‘tired’ look, it’s hard not to immediately imagine what goes on behind those doors, isn’t it?

Well, that is what we want to help avoid today, particularly when it comes to our readers’ homes. Because there is no excuse for a shabby exterior façade. If you are currently living in your forever home, you have a responsibility towards yourself (and guests) to keep it as neat and welcoming on the outside as possible so that your property doesn’t become the ‘bad one’ on the street or in the neighbourhood. And keeping it clean and stylish on the outside becomes even more crucial if you plan on selling your house later on, for then kerb appeal comes into play.

Regardless, we want to help you up your home’s exterior appearance, which could even save you money through the prevention of long-term problems. And that’s why we’ve collected these 10 examples of one-storey homes that are all stylish and welcoming.

Who knows, one of them might just inspire you to devote your next Saturday to sprucing up your house’s façade…

1. Sometimes less is indeed more! And by that we mean that a simple paintjob with subtle colours can go a long way to upping a house's exterior style.

2. A neat and tidy pathway goes a long way.

A quick power wash will instantly breathe new life into your front entrance, ridding it of old dirt and stains. And committing to constant maintenance (i.e. clearing away weeds, replacing cracked paving stones) will make sure your house remains neat and welcoming in case unannounced visitors stop by.

3. Is your front door looking a bit dull? Make it come to life again via a fresh paintjob.

Other ways of enhancing a front door includes placing potted plants next to it, replacing the porch lighting, laying down a new welcome mat…

4. Manicure your front garden

It certainly doesn’t take that long to trim back an overgrown garden, going a long way to improving a house’s charm (and possibly even its resale value).

Would you say this modern property would have been just as enticing without that little stone garden in front? Certainly not!

5. Neat windows

You don’t need a massive design budget to transform your house’s exterior. Sometimes simple woodwork and window repainting (which shouldn’t cost more than £100) can add a world of value to a house. Even just giving grubby windows a thorough wash can make your exteriors look brighter and better than before.

6. Altering a home's exterior cladding can make it stand out from the rest of the street. Just don't let it become too prominent! Either opt for striking materials or eye-catching colours, but don’t do both.

7. Look up—could that roof do with a different colour? Some new tiles? How about just a good ol' cleaning?

8. An already picture-perfect exterior façade can be kicked up a notch by opening it up to the interiors.

Imagine what some glass doors / generous windows can do for your house's view from the outside. Of course this means your interiors will also have to be stylish and neat at all times!

9. Is your exterior façade as practical as can be? Ever considered an overhang to cover your front porch?

10. Update those broken gutters, gates and fences

You don’t need more than a weekend to tackle gutters hanging off their fixings, broken gates and unloved garden fences.

From exterior style to interior splendour, we’re going to show you How to properly plan a budget for your next kitchen makeover.
