In modern times it is quite easy to view architecture as a simple means of designing buildings (houses, shopping centers, hospitals, corporate offices, etc.), but we must never forget that architecture enjoys a firm place in the visual arts industry. In fact, when looking at the history of European art, there is a clear reference to art’s obsession with architecture. And it is in these ancient times where a very unique genre, known as ‘architectural painting’, was birthed. With a prime focus on urban scenes and majestic buildings, architectural paintings display fascinating structures that play with depth and spatiality.

Many of these works focus on real cityscapes, yet there is also a wealth of examples where the painters fantasied and fabricated structures and topography from their rich imaginations.

Cut to today’s times, where nearly all architects and designers resort to state-of-the-art programme's to render 3D works of their projects. And while modern design programme's certainly present many fantastic advantages (more lifelike designs and making for easier measurements of the structures and spaces, etc.), it is refreshing to discover modern professionals who still enjoy displaying their work with more traditional methods, such as painting with watercolours.

One such professional team is London-based firm 4D Studio Architects and Interior Designers. Known as a leader in the architectural and interior design industry, 4D Studio consists of a team of highly skilled professionals dedicated to prime results for each and every project. And while cutting edge technology undoubtedly forms part of the firm’s day-to-day operations (ensuring perfection for projects focused on residential architecture, interior design, new builds, renovations, extensions, and much more), the company is certainly no stranger to making use of more vintage mediums.

1. Palheiro Estate in Madeira

For the striking Palheiro estate, marketed as the best address in Madeira, both contemporary styled and traditional architectural options were designed by the professionals. Here, various individual villas can be seen illustrated in watercolour drawings to evoke a classic, almost fantasy-like design for the structures, which extend to backyard pools and garden terraces.

2. Traditional House Designs for Hampshire sites

A range of luxury homes in various traditional styles are conjured up soft colours for this particular project.

Notice the depth of the detail, such as the shadows of the landscape elements helping to make the main structure (the house) become more prominent in appearance.

3. Hampton Hill in Richmond, London

The choice of medium returns to watercolours for this project: four flats created above shops facing Hampton Hill High Street and a further eight apartments overlooking Bushy park itself.

4. Conservatories and Winter Gardens

Extensions and additions also form a big part of 4D Studio’s work. Here, various design ideas illustrate (literally) how small rear extensions, winter gardens, and conservatories can increase the amenity and visual aesthetics of standard house builder homes.

5. Works of Art by Charles Jamieson

For paintings and works of art, 4D Studio liaises closely with award-winning artist Charles Jamieson, who has been nominated as “one of 50 Scottish Artists to invest in”. For top-notch results, Charles also brings a wealth of experience and an extensive network of highly regarded fellow artists to every project he works on.
