Whether you are building a new home or refurbishing your old one, proper home insulation is something that you simply cannot ignore. The benefits of home insulation are many.

- It can help you to build an energy efficient home.

- It can increase the efficiency of your air conditioners and heaters.

- It can reduce the electricity bill.

- It prevents heat loss in winter and keeps the interior cool in summer.

- It can help you to build a more comfortable home.

Indirectly, it also helps to reduce green house gas emissions, thus helping you to live in a more environmentally friendly way. When it comes to insulation, all basic structural elements including the ceiling, walls, and flooring require tending. Even the roof of a building is not excluded from this list. As you can see, the proper insulation of your home requires thorough planning. But what are the avenues that you can explore?

Green roof

Our collective desire to build more energy efficient and properly insulated homes is reviving some age old traditions. Green roofs, commonly called a sod roof, are quite common in Scandinavian homes. You can now build a green roof and enjoy living in a stylish and comfortable green home.

Optigrün International AG helps homeowners to build a green roof or a green terrace. If you have a flat roof, you can even build a roof garden to create a comfortable indoor and fashionable outdoor space.

Insulating the walls

A variety of materials are used for this process. Blanket insulation is the most common, and is available widely. In this process batts or rolls made of sheep’s wool, cotton, plastic fibre or mineral wool are used for insulating the walls. You can use fibreglass insulation of different sizes.

Foam board or rigid foam provides excellent thermal resistance. In some regions, using concrete blocks filled with insulating material is common for new constructions.

Insulation for the ceiling and roof

Ceilings and roofs can be insulated using Structural Insulated Panels or SIPs. They provide uniform insulation and can result in considerable energy savings. SIPs are generally pre-fabricated so installing them is easy and less time consuming compared with some other processes.

SIPs use straw core, also known as straw bale, foam board or liquid foam insulation. Here we can see builders are using straw core insulation on the roof of a Viennese home planned by Allmermacke. SIPs are also useful for walls and flooring.

Insulating the attic and loft space

Radiant barriers and reflective insulation systems are highly favoured for attic and loft spaces. This type of insulation reflects radiant heat away from the surface and keeps the temperature cool inside. They reduce cooling costs and create a more soothing ambience.

If you occupy the top-most apartment of any building, then this insulation would add comfort to your home. Reflective insulation is generally made of aluminium foils. Radiant barriers and reflective insulation is reinforced with cardboard, polyethylene bubbles or craft paper.

Upholstered wall panels

Upholstered wall panels can help you in more than one ways. It can help you to have better insulation at home. You can also derive acoustical benefits from their use. If you are living in the heart of the city, you already know the necessity of having a soundproof home.

Besides, they can be installed with a minimum amount of fuss and are cost effective when you do not need to make too much of a structural alteration. Depending on the existing colour scheme, you can have upholstered panels in specific colours.

Once you've insulated your attic or loft, why not use the space to the max and create a spa-style bathroom?
