DIY Instructions for Making a Double Door Wardrobe
Design is the cornerstone of all great projects. A wardrobe, no matter how simple it is, requires some forethought and design before you start building. So let’s look at how to make a wardrobe for your bedroom!
Choose the Right Materials
The first step is to choose the right materials for your wardrobe. You can use just about any kind of wood as long as it’s not warped or twisted. Here are some examples:
You will also need paneling to cover the doors. For a rustic look, you can use tongue-and-groove paneling. For a sleeker look, you can use plywood boards.
Design the Wardrobe to Your Liking
Once you have chosen the right materials, it’s time to design your wardrobe. You can take measurements of your bedroom and then sketch out the perfect design for your space or you can wing it! Don’t be afraid to try out different designs. There’s no wrong way to design your wardrobe as long as it fits in your space and meets your needs. Draw a simple sketch of what you want the final result to look like on some graph paper and then plan how large each door should be.
Now that you have designed your double wardrobes, it’s time to build it!
Now that you have your design, it’s time to get started. Before you begin building your wardrobe, gather all of the tools and materials you will need for this project. These are some of the most common tools used in this project:
The most important tool you will need is your saw. This project requires many cut-outs so invest in the best quality circular saw you can afford.
Measure Your Space and Design the Wardrobe to Be Centered
Measure the space you have to work with and plan where your wardrobe will be located. For example, if you want to center it along one wall, then measure how large it needs to be so that both doors can swing open without hitting anything. Draw up another sketch on graph paper showing this design. This is important because you will need to build the shelves and back paneling accordingly.
Frame the Wardrobe
Start by making the base of your wardrobe. Cut out all of the pieces according to your design and assemble the frame as shown in the picture on this page. Use nails or screws and wood glue to make it extra sturdy (wood glue is always a good idea on any project).
Cut Panels to Size
A wardrobe made from pine or poplar boards will need to be painted or stained. If you are using tongue-and-groove paneling for the doors, then only cut the panels to size and leave them unstained until after installation.
Decide on how thick your shelves should be and build each shelf out of board pieces. Each shelf should be the same height as the distance between your frame boards. Measure this and cut all of your shelves to size at once so that they are even. You can attach them with nails or glue depending on how sturdy you want them.
Next, install the paneling on each door using small nails along the top edge of each paneling board. Remember that you should have cut out each door so that they are the correct size to fit into your frame.
Use sandpaper to smooth any rough or jagged edges on your wardrobe where necessary. Then install the doors by removing them from their hinges and attaching them to the front of your new wardrobe with screws.
Attach Doors to Wardrobe Frame
Finally, use a hammer or screwdriver to attach the hinges along the top of each door and then reattach them to the front of your new wardrobe. Then, test out how well your new wardrobe works by hanging clothes from your shelves and testing both doors so they close without getting stuck in between one another.
