As a premier real estate market of the United States, Brooklyn requires no introduction. Its cosmopolitan neighbourhoods are marked by a number of row houses and town houses. The house we are going to show you today was one of those old and weary townhouses of Brooklyn desperately in need of a makeover.

In came Ben Herzog Architect and his team of designers. They conducted a fairly intensive renovation of the entire house. The result is in front of you to see and appreciate.

Living room

The classic design of the interior has been kept intact. The old fireplace, windows and ceiling mouldings typical to an arts and crafts home still grace the interior of this living room.

Pale blue walls are juxtaposed with warm wooden floors. Mid century modern sofas are placed on a vintage rug, adding warmth and style.

Kitchen

The bright interior of the kitchen is one of the most delightful places to be in this house. It follows a U-shaped layout. Cabinets and storage units are set against the walls. A small kitchen island occupies the central position.

Beautiful casement windows help in the influx of natural light and also enable the owners to gain views of the surroundings. Decorative tiles and vintage cabinets also stay true to the original structure of the building.

Dining room

If you want to stylise your home by using decorative ceilings, you must study this dining room in great detail. The white ceiling with subtle motifs, complemented by laurel green walls, is one of its biggest assets.

Luscious red dining chairs inject some liveliness into this small space. Chic pendant lighting also plays its part in cheering up the interior.

Bedroom

The bedroom retains the classical flavour of this old home. An ebonised bed, paired with a charming bedside table, is the main reason for its graceful look. A blue vintage area rug makes its presence felt, too.

The lighting fixture deserves a honourable mention. It is one of the modern elements of décor that effortlessly blends with the other features of this room.

Bathroom

Tiles with harlequin pattern are an all time favourite. The cement tiles have been painstakingly sourced by the owners. Except for these tiles, the bathroom also boasts black accents in the form of stylish work tops.

Under stair space

The stairway, marked by two tone steps and traditional balustrades, looks graceful and appealing enough. But see how the under stair has been transformed into an effective storage area, including a fashionable shoe closet—genius!

Roof before renovation

The refurbishments included the renovation of the roof and building a small entertainment zone in this area. The image shows the state of the roof before the start of the project.

Roof deck after renovation

Now the roof boasts a beautiful sundeck, perfect for enjoying the views of Brooklyn’s ever expanding skyline. A modern dining set and deck chairs have been placed here for occasional dinner parties as well as resting and relaxation.

To make this area accessible, a stair bulkhead has been constructed as well. When evening sets in, embedded roof lights keep this space illuminated.

Backyard before remodelling

The backyard is also worth a look. It was clumsily designed with an emergency exit staircase, electrical wiring and small windows. The space looked nothing less than shoddy before the grand remodelling.

Backyard after remodelling

The back yard has now been renovated with glass and aluminium panels. Though it bears little resemblance to the architecture of the building, it helps to open up the basement and ground floor. Courtesy of the big windows and doorway, this area now receives a generous amount of natural light.

Post-renovation, the house now has modern insulation facilities, including highly efficient heat pumps, and two gas fireplaces. The old boiler has been removed and the access to the cellar has also been changed from the front of the house to the back.

Though mostly out of the sight, these added features help this home to be in sync with modern times. If you are thinking of renovating a portion of your traditional building, take inspiration from this beautiful Brooklyn townhouse.
