Part of an historic Guernsey farmhouse the brief was to generate additional space for a new kitchen and enlarge the master bedroom of this rural home in the Forest. The scheme would optimise the flow through the house by reworking the entrance hall.

Added to in three phases the house has retained its characteristic façade. The most recent extension completed in the early 2000’s takes the form of a large two storey extension, constructed in a granite and oak frame barn style. Our clients were keen that both the farmhouse and the recent extension were retained and not overly altered.

Designed by Oliver Westgarth, the scheme responds directly to the site and builds on the geometry of the existing structure to produce a partially concealed glazed intervention that gives interplay between building and garden, whilst making the most of the site’s long views.

Alterations to the existing structure have been kept to a minimum. Where the building is extended glazing is contained behind a new granite wall which disguises the structure from the road, forming an enclave for the glazed structure on the garden side. Randomly placed windows on the road facing facade refer to the historic barn and the historic cottage to the north.

On the garden side the glazing is set back, designed to be a ‘shadow’ of the existing gable. The glazing in connecting interior with garden both makes the most of the buildings rural position and provides natural illumination for the kitchen, master bedroom and music room, through the inclusion of a deep plan ‘walk on’ roof light.
