Alterations and extension to Georgian house in a listed setting

Location: Horsley, Gloucestershire. Client: Private

We were commissioned to repair, adapt and update this property to provide new spaces for modern living whilst reinstating the classic features of the Georgian rooms.

We designed a contemporary extension in glass and stone, to house an open plan kitchen and dining room, opening out onto a south facing patio through a slide-away glazed wall. A new entrance connects these spaces with the original house and its formal rooms, improving circulation and access to the rear of the property. Alterations to the house addressed a number of poor interventions, alongside fabric repairs and replacement of unsympathetic building work. This included creating a new family bathroom and en-suite, restoration of living and bedrooms, and reinstatement of the grand open stairwell and landing.

The success of this scheme lies in the harmonious relationship between the contemporary addition, the house and its listed setting. This has been achieved through modesty of scale, stepping back from the principal frontage, use of dressed stone to match surrounding materials and a green roof softening the building into the hillside.
