Located on a sloping plot near woodland but with open views to the north and east, our clients wanted to improve the relationship between their cottage and the sunny rear garden which was almost at first floor level. Hetreed Ross Architects explored a number of options to balance the new extension with the traditional cottage and its Cotswold stone tiled roof resulting in a contemporary kitchen dining space to be located half a level up from the entrance, giving level access via a sliding glass corner onto a terrace and the garden which will be re-landscaped with a planted bank. The levels will create a dramatic multi height internal space. Externally it will be clad in cedar with slimline aluminium framed glazing to maximise daylight and views, with sedum covered flat roofs which visually extend the garden onto the house. A new contemporary stair connecting all levels replaces the existing narrow stair, thus creating a large master bedroom in the original part of the cottage by combining two bedrooms and the stair. The cottage is in the Green Belt so the maximum volume increase was carefully and successfully negotiated with Wiltshire Planners.

The project is shortlisted for the West of England Local Authority Building Control 2014 awards
