City Hideaway, Kulyk Interior Design Studio Kulyk Interior Design Studio Modern living room

This interior has a special character. It takes on a unique piquancy during the nighttime. Warm accent lighting pulls separate areas of the room out from the deep shadows, exposing the rich texture of natural stone and wood. The glare from the fireplace’s flame lends a golden hue to the white marble and dissolves into the cognac oak wall panels.

When you’re dealing with tiny apartment or home, figuring out how to make the most of your square footage is essential. Yulia Kulyk, the founder of the Geneva based Interior Design Studio, knows this firsthand. “The concept of this space has been largely dictated by the features of the project”, says Yulia. “This customer and I are tied together by years of collaboration and multiple, successfully-completed projects and as a result, I was given some carte blanche on concept development for this interior. In a different case, approval of the similar concepts could cause a host of difficulties, as not everyone would dare to use a dark shades for the small space The main challenges of the original layout were small apartment size and poor lighting in the living area. While working, there were many constructive solutions and decorating strategies designed to turn existing cons into pros. First of all, physical expansion of the living room size was done by merging it with the cooking area while the kitchen, made by custom design in our studio, was compactly combined with the four-person dining table. Also, a glass partition with sliding doors was designed with the purpose of separating the bedroom from the living room. Its unique purpose is to allocate space and furthermore, to let light from the bedroom window into the living room. In order to visually widen the space, deep, dark colors, bright textures and accent lighting were used. These kinds of tricks allow one to accentuate the essential and blur boundaries, because if boundaries (in our case, walls) don’t have clear outlines, a feeling arises that they don’t exist at all. Much attention was paid to the textures and their interaction. Note, for example, how the decorative beams in rosewood veneer, which decorate the ceiling in the kitchen area, differ from the wall panels in the living room and how the porcelain stoneware texture on the wall echoes the aged mirror on the top kitchen cabinet. One interesting layout discovery was the position of the bed in the master bedroom. By opening the doors of the glass partition, the fireplace and the TV located in the living room become perfectly visible. If necessary, the glass partition can be visually separated from the living room with the help of a curtain. As for decorative solutions in the bedroom, it’s the same as the living room. The Blanche bed is adorned with dark, faux suede and bedding set made from natural linen. The décor above the bed replaces the Gino Sarfatti chandelier from Flos. The master bedroom is adjoined to a bathroom and a warm loggia with floor-to-ceiling windows. The loggia is furnished with a vanity table and a reading area with a Calligaris accent armchair. The contents of this interior deserve special attention because amongst the famous furniture brands are placed custom pieces made specifically for this project. For example, in living room a sofa from the Blanche factory sits adjacent to a coffee table made of Italian marble, made by Yulia’s design. In the hallway, against the backdrop of a wall lined with porcelain stoneware from La Fabbrica, a solid granite sideboard table, virtuosically made by Nikolay Stepanet’s Carpentry, is also designed by Yulia Kulyk. Despite the small apartment size, there is plenty of space for storage. A small room is set aside for household effects and a drying rack, and a spacious wardrobe in the hallway holds an impressive amount of clothes and shoes. There is yet another room in the apartment, which can act as an office or a nursery; in it, is a sofa-bed with an orthopedic mattress and a sizeable work desk with multiple compartments for storage. There is a walk-in closet in one part of the room separated by a partition with sliding doors. At the entrance to the kitchen area is a guest bathroom equipped with sanitary ware and bathroom furniture designed by Antonio Citterio for Kolo.
