Dutch Funeral Museum “tot zover”, buiten gebruik buiten gebruik Commercial spaces Museums

Everyone will have associations with death, but modern and transparent are not the most obvious words in that context. However, the Dutch Funeral Museum – Tot Zover – is housed in a bright modern building. A building for the museum and café, as an extension of a 19th century gravedigger house at the entrance of the New Eastern Cemetery in Amsterdam.A new building in such a powerful but yet fragile context requires a strong concept. We were inspired by the ideas of the German philosopher Ernst Bloch (also with his roots in the 19th century). Bloch found the modernist architecture too abstract and too little connected with the ground; modern architects avoided the mud and had lift their buildings up to visually float above the earth. We've proposed a modern extention but instead of lifting the building we let it “sink” into the earth and emphasized the relationship with the soil that Bloch had missed. It strongly refers to the cemetery, where the coffins also are ‘six feet under’.
