This project sensitively refurbishes and remodels a four bedroomed Barbican apartment, located on the 20th floor of the Grade 2 listed Cromwell Tower. The primary intention was to retain the character of the original, whilst adapting it to the requirements of contemporary living and the particular needs of the client. Fixtures are restored or upgraded with historically suitable replacements, whilst the layout is adjusted to increase the scale of the living space and to reduce the space given over to circulation. Slender stud walls are engineered to co-ordinate with the narrow frames of the external glazing system, while internal openings are subtly enlarged to incorporate full height doors.

The kitchen has been adapted to the requirements of family living and can be separated from the dining and living space by floor to ceiling sliding doors. Here and in the bathrooms, existing fixtures and fittings have been reconditioned and incorporated into the new layout. Throughout the apartment, a new ceiling conceals wiring, integrated audio and video cabling, and flush curtain track. Sheet cork rubber provides a seamless floor surface throughout.
