Costa Navarino, the award-winning resort on the most south westerly edge of Messinia in Greece, was the dream of Captain Vassilis C. Constantakopoulos who, from humble beginnings, made his fortune in shipping and was determined to use this to the benefit of his native Messinia. His vision was to preserve and promote the region by creating high-end sustainable accommodations and facilities that would attract international visitors to this remote and historic part of Greece.

MKV Design worked with the client from the very early days of the project, contributing to the overall vision for the first phase, Navarino Dunes, and creating the interiors of the Romanos Luxury Collection and Westin hotels, the Agora Village, the House of Events conference centre, Anazoe Spa, Inbi restaurant and the golf clubhouse.

MKV’s design aesthetic was a response to the location – the sea, the sun, the curve of the bay, the dunes and the olive trees. Views were paramount, so buildings were oriented to maximise these and the dunes themselves were made to play a key function as a verdant natural border between the public beach and the terraces of the suites. The in/out experience is everything; there are no barriers in between. MKV achieved this by, for example, continuing the key materials used indoors, outside, and, in reverse, by bringing some of the water channels which criss-cross the gardens and terraces into the buildings. Both public and guest spaces flow, from open terrace levels to shaded terraces into interior spaces that are open to the views and then indoor areas that are intimate or ‘closed’.

MKV also took its inspiration from the history and architectural inheritance of Messinia. The region offers a rich tapestry from the time legend and history were entwined, and working from the master plan, MKV developed simple but monumental forms with references to either to ancient Greek or to Byzantine vernacular. Yet, while the design incorporates historic references, MKV does not believe that resort guests want to “live” history, but rather that they want to sense it within a contemporary experience. As a result, the interiors of all the buildings at Navarino Dunes are designed to express the lifestyles of the people who will visit them for years to come.
