A large loft-conversion within a six-storey Victorian mansion block in the heart of the Kensington & Chelsea conservation area.

Set at the top of a large mansion-block building opposite the Olympia exhibition centre in Kensington, London, the proposal creates a single open-plan loft room as an extension to a four-bedroom apartment on the level below. A new timber and glass staircase, inserted into the smallest bedroom, provides access up to the a new master-bedroom suite above, with dressing area, open-plan bathroom and large roof-lights to the south. The proposals work within the existing building envelope, without any external alterations other than the new flush roof-lights on the rear slope, to preserve the character of the original building and satisfy the planning constraints of the conservation area. Work was carried out in several stages to tie in with maintenance work to the whole building, which made this project possible due to limited access to the roof. This required careful planning, design and negotiation in order to fit in with the other building occupants and separate contractors.
