There's something about white that no other colour can parallel—in spite of its almost non—existent, non—obtrusive nature, the colour white makes for the most stunning backdrop for any space. Whether it's to create an illusion of space, or to tone down the melodrama in design, it's the most versatile non—colour ever. And no other space could illustrate this fact better than Sonali Shah's latest residential project in Mumbai.

Sonali believes in flooring the interiors with light—and she's done it here with the help of floor- to—ceiling windows. ’All interior spaces have large glass panels that integrate them with the outside, the extensive use of glass to create continuity in space, and of course, a white colour palette to maintain the fluidity of design,’ she says.

The owners, an elderly couple, wanted a contemporary space, with dual, almost schizophrenic quality!

’They wanted a warm cozy retreat for themselves, but at the same time they wanted the space to unfold into a scintillating party space when their kids chose to party,’ informs Sonali, and they wanted it to be Vastu compliant.

That explains the sliding glass doors, which slides open to merge the guest room, the master bedroom and the living- cum -dining area into a huge entertaining space.

The house, with its innumerable glass doors, which demarcate and at the same time connect the different, infuse an almost sculptural quality to this house. It's like walking in a glass maze.
