The original cattle shed was in a derelict state, with crumbling walls and no roof. The site sits within the Haigh Country Park Conservation Area as well as being in the Green Belt. The decision was taken early in the concept stage to convert the existing cattle shed into a 3 bedroom spacious family home whilst still maintaining the materials and structural elements that would connect to the buildings original heritage and surroundings.

The building had huge sentimental value for the owners and so the reinvention and renovation had to be sympathetic in order to incorporate as much as possible in the new design. This meant retaining and repairing the existing stone work but complementing it with modern painted timber cladding to add that contemporary touch. The planning restrictions also meant that only the existing window and door openings could be used and no new ones added, with some well thought out design this ‘restriction’ actually allowed a dramatic, high-impact 6m high glazed atrium. The open plan ground floor space creates a homely farmhouse feel and allows the family to interact between the spaces effortlessly. The three bedrooms are spacious, well positioned for the spectacular views and are all ensuite with the master having its own suite including a luxury dressing room and spa bathroom. The ingenious design manages to create 2500ft of well-appointed space with all the modern day essentials such as utility, downstairs wc and storage spaces. The design is respectful of its setting, heritage and architectural history and it’s for this reason it has been nominated for Best Conversion at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2015 and Best Conversion at the Wigan Design Awards 2015.
