Roman House, London
In 2010, Berkeley Plc purchased this modernist office block in the heart of the City of London. Since its heyday in the 1950s Roman House had declined to an empty shell and was in a state of neglect. The Manser Practice were appointed to redesign and refurbish the interiors to create a luxury residential development.
We designed 90 exclusive apartments and 3 penthouses, many overlooking the beautiful urban oasis of St Alphege Garden which houses the largest remaining part of the Roman City wall. When planning the apartments we were constrained both by the building’s existing concrete frame and our client’s requirement for a diverse product mix. Drawing on our extensive experience in refurbishment and space planning we achieved an internal layout that maximised the number of units while creating high-value distinctive units.
We have drawn inspiration from Italian cities including Florence, Venice and Verona, to produce elegant colour schemes for the apartments and the public areas. The furnishing and dressing of the show flat also reference the Italian theme, with beautiful natural materials and indulgent fabrics.
