This L shaped, vertical timber clad, extension and remodeling of an existing suburban house has created a cozy family sanctuary and is a complete re-think of the humble British bungalow. We utilised the ‘redundant’ space between the neighbour and the house and looked at the layout of the existing spaces to convert it from a congested, overheated house into a contemporary 3 bedroomed home. We provided a new entrance and hallway leading into an open-plan dining, kitchen and living area where the new entrance arrangement drastically freed up valuable space within the existing building, making one of the existing bedrooms significantly larger.

Clad in cedar, the cantilevered extension provides an elegant surprise to the rear of the property with large sliding glass doors that open up the corner to the garden completely, blurring the line between inside and outside. The unapologetically crisp and modern extension is distinct from the existing bungalow that also has been brightened up. The whole family was involved in the design process so you may well ask “why the pink door”? – The answer came from the client’s 6 year old daughter.

Our extension has added more than just value to the house itself, it has turned a standard space into a unique space for a young family to grow, relax and come together. It’s a project that has packed a lot into it and given a huge amount back.
