When do I need an architect?

There is no actual law forcing you to employ an architect when building or improving your home. However, as architects are skilled professionals, they can have quite an impact on the cost and quality of a project, regardless of whether it's a brand-new build or minor alterations to an existing structure.

Should you have a very clear vision of what it is you want to achieve with a certain project (such as a bathroom renovation) and you already have a professional builder whose judgement and vision you trust, the services of an architect becomes less vital. Should you not have an idea of how to go about something, then an architect can certainly provide suggestions and make the entire process proceed more smoothly.

Another option would be to speak to an architectural designer or technician who still have the relevant experience designing small- and medium-sized homes and/or renovation projects, but who won't charge as much to engage with.

Always remember that your architect of choice must be registered with the Architects Registration Board

What can a Cardiff architect do for me?

Help to save costs, for one thing. If your building project is in Cardiff it just makes sense to employ an architect based in Cardiff as well, seeing as an architect from other areas (like Gloucester or Oxford) will incur travel expenses.

In terms of physical job description, an architect (regardless of where he or she is located) is responsible for designing all kinds of buildings, from houses and office buildings to shopping malls and hospitals. In addition to designing the exterior façade and interior layout of a building, an architect must also ensure that his structure is safe, functional and economical.

That is why it's important for an architect to be involved in every step of the construction project, from the initial planning stages to the final completion.
Thanks to modern technology, architects use computer-aided design (CAD) tools and software to create 3D models and renderings. These help illustrate what a structure's finished design and layout could look like before any physical building work commences.

In addition to assisting you with their design skills, an architect in Cardiff can also put you in touch with other professionals in the area such as builders, engineers, landscape architects, etc. Selecting a professional in the Cardiff region means you also benefit from their knowledge of:

• Cardiff’s climate and environment

• Reliable contractors

• The relevant building regulations of your suburb or zone

• Local authority planning regulations.

How do I find the right architect in Cardiff?

See homify as a trusted source of professionals in Cardiff, including architects, interior designers, painters, flooring experts, etc. Finding various architects on the homify platform is easy and straightforward, for our lists include additional information such as where each professional is located, information and images of past projects, and even customer reviews.

Keep in mind that many architects have their own areas of specialities; thus, it’s definitely worth taking the time to sift through various options and making contact with a few different firms and individuals before choosing the right one.

How much do architects in Cardiff cost?

• The extent of the architect’s services
• The project’s size and complexity

• Specific requirements for the structure

• Number of design repetitions

• The type of practice of the architect (i.e. a freelancer may have fewer overheads)

• The experience and expertise of the architect and/or his firm.

Although not cast in concrete, the percentages below roughly illustrate how an architect’s final fee can be grouped into the various stages of a design project:

• Concept: 20%

• Design development: 20%

• Technical design: 15%

• Tender documentation: 25%

• Construction to hand-over: 20%.

What other professionals do I need for my project?

The number and type of professionals involved in an architectural project will vary from build to build, depending on the plot characteristics (ground conditions and topography, for example), the build route, the design, plus the construction method of the house/building.

A simple, straightforward design without any major issues will require only the usual experts such as the architect, builders, etc. A more complex process could involve many more consultants, contractors and contributors from the following fields:

• Architects and structural designers

• Designers specialising in specific areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, garden landscapes, etc.

• Project managers

• Surveyors

• Structural engineers

• Tree surgeons

 • Main contractors / builders

• Bricklayers

• Stone masons

• Roofers

• Window fitters

• Plasterers

• Electricians

• Plumbers and heating engineers

• Interior decorators

• Tilers

• Planning officers

• Warranty inspectors, etc.

Cardiff's architectural history

Architecture in Cardiff stretches from the Norman period (11th century) to the present day. Even though no single building style is exclusively associated with Cardiff, its city centre shows off various 19th and early 20th century shopping arcades, resulting from Cardiff’s rise to success as a major coal port during the 19th century.

The city is known for its fantasy castles, such as Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch (both designed by the Victorian architect William Burges). Modern-day structures have also been added to Cardiff’s architectural landscape, including the Millennium Stadium (opened in 1999) in the city centre, as well as the new Cardiff Central Library (opened in March 2009), which is an excellent example of sustainable architecture.
