What does a Kitchen Planner in Leicester do?

A professional Kitchen Planner meets with clients to discuss ideas on how to meet their goals regarding new and improved kitchens. Said clients may be considering remodelling their existing kitchen via small touch-ups (such as new cabinetry or lighting fixtures) or looking to build a brand-new one, whether it’s in their existing home or a new house they’re moving into.

Using their skills and experience, professional Kitchen Planners assist clients with:

·         Planning out the scope, functionality and look of their new kitchen

·         Drawing up a budget

·         Avoiding unforeseen mistakes and complications (a crucial factor which distinguishes a DIY project from working with a professional)

·         Choosing from a variety of materials, finishes, colours, patterns, and textures.

It is not unusual for a Kitchen Planner to work with another design professional, like an Architect or Interior Designer, to improve on a project.

The skills and knowledge required for kitchens in the residential (houses) and commercial (restaurants) industries may differ considerably, especially when it comes to the building codes (which are usually stricter for a commercial project).

What can I do before hiring a Kitchen Planner?

First of all, check if your Kitchen Planner charges a consultation fee for a first meeting. Then, make sure no precious time is wasted (either on your side or theirs) by preparing the following:

1.    A wish list: Draw up a list of things that you WANT for your new kitchen, as well as things that you NEED.

2.    Your priorities: Knowing what you want out of this project (i.e. a larger seating area, improved storage) can help you contain your costs.

3.    Ideas and photos: Make use of homify and Pinterest (and the rest of the Internet) to collect ideas that reflect what you want from your new kitchen in terms of design styles (modern, classic, rustic, etc.), materials, furniture, etc. Be sure to take this to your first meeting so the Kitchen Planner can get an idea of your personal style and likes.

4.    List of appliances: Your Kitchen Planner needs to know if your kitchen remodel will include all new appliances or just replace one or two so that it can be factored into the budget.

5.    A budget range: Although you will work on costs together, you need to inform the Kitchen Planner from the start of what you can spend on the project.

6.    Questions for the designer: It always helps to ask the Kitchen Planner a few questions to help determine if they’re the correct person for the job. Your questions will depend on the size and scope of your project, but some good ones to keep in mind can include:

·         How can we maximise my kitchen’s efficiency?

·         Where can the appliances be placed?

·         Who will take charge of my project?

·         Can we factor pantry storage into the new layout?

·         How should the cabinetry be organised?

How much will it cost to hire a professional Kitchen Planner in Leicester?

Kitchen Planners will use various methods of charging clients for their services. The way they calculate their fees will often depend on the way they structure their business.

·         Hourly rate: Independent Kitchen Planners usually charge an hourly rate to work on a project, which could apply to their design time, taking meetings and phone calls, etc.

·         Designer retainer or flat fee: This is the fee that a Kitchen Planner charges for his/her initial design services and it covers the time that the professional spends planning your new culinary space – though often at a discounted rate. Remember that the retainer fee may cover a specific amount of hours the professional will work on your new kitchen, or maybe an exact number of design revisions. Beyond that number, your Kitchen Planner may charge you an hourly rate for additional time spent working on the project. Be sure to check with them before you sign any contracts to make sure you understand these details.

·         Cost-plus or mark-up: This is a pretty standard way that Kitchen Planners charge for their services, especially those types of designers who sell products or purchase them on your behalf. It works with the professional buying the products at a trade (or wholesale) discount and then marking them up to the client, keeping the difference as profit.

·         Deposit: It is not uncommon for a Kitchen Planner to request a large deposit or down payment. This enables them to order products for your kitchen project. The deposits may range from 25 – 65% of your total project cost, although 50% is usually more standard. It could also happen that another large portion of the project cost (30 – 50%) will be due as soon as the cabinets are delivered to your home.

·         Project milestone-based fees: Should you hire a Kitchen Planner with a building background or one who is employed by a general contractor or design-build company, it may happen that you run across a milestone-based fee structure. What this basically means is that the project’s total cost is split up into several payments that are due at various deliverables – for example, once the cabinets are ordered, once the old kitchen is demolished, etc.

There are no fixed prices for Kitchen Planners and remodelling work; however, recent surveys calculated the cost of a new kitchen to be somewhere between £17,041 and £46,265. That means the costs of hiring a Kitchen Planner could be between £1,542 and £4,626. For smaller projects, the price may be between £7,711 and £11,566 (which lowers the Kitchen Planner’s costs down to £771 - £1,156).

It is not uncommon for the Kitchen Planner to charge around 8% for a project above £77,110. But we recommend that you compare those estimates from Kitchen Planners in and near Leicester to see who charges for what and how much flexibility you have with your new kitchen budget.
