Previously this house had a dark kitchen at the lower ground level and a large utility room that formed a barrier between house and garden. The new configuration offers a ribbon of linked but tailored spaces, including a bright kitchen opening to the garden and an evening dining area at the heart of the plan. By reorienting the the stair from the hall above, the rear garden is now revealed during the decent to the lower level. The extension roof provides a second planted garden and terrace, linked to the more formal living rooms on the upper ground floor. The owners’ interest in textured materials is expressed through parquet floors, dark joinery and galvanized steel which is used for the rear facade and planters.
