This well proportioned period property had a series of ad hoc meanly scaled extensions across the back. Without any need for additional space, our brief was to completely remodel the informal areas to rationalise and revitalise the house, transforming the family’s lifestyle. Our clients were looking specifically to create a remarkable piece of architecture to delight the senses. Our solution was a zinc clad sculpture, half stealth bomber and half origami; a faceted angular form, designed to cloak the new living spaces within and frame dynamic views across the garden. Seen from outside, the folding planes are covered in dark zinc with carefully considered low profile seams and junctions. Rainwater is drained by way of hidden gutters and downpipes. Internally, the irregular planes of the ceiling are slashed by glass roof lights. The floor is a sheet of gloss white, with accents provided by the concealed lighting, a ribbon of fire and a sliding hardwood pocket wall.
