The practice were appointed to combine a property that had been
sub-divided back in the 70’s, although our brief was to retain the independence of the two elements.

ARB Architecture Ltd designed and applied for planning for a cotemporary curved extension that encompassed both divisions of the property. A ancillary studio and a communal dining spaced was shared by both, allowing the family to enjoy catching up on their days activities whilst retaining their privacy with their own part of the house.

The practice successfully gained planning approval and assisted on technical guidance and regulations during the build.

Location
Paignton, Devon.
  • Previous extension

The previous extension was tired, thermally inefficient and created a cold shadowed corner. There is a clear separation between garden and house.

  • Removed section of extension

  • New curved extension

New extension addresses the garden and the house creating a bright family dining space linking outdoor and indoor.

  • New dining area

The new brighter dining area acts as an intermediate space between garden and home, catching the eyes attention and bringing the outside in. Light floods the space from the skylight above, the added height also creates room for a feature adding animation to the space.
