Classics + Corian

Seven historical furniture objects have changed into experimental catalyzer of time. They became solitaires in which the age of material meets the perfect timelessness. This is the newest project of two designers from the studio deFORM and the company Happy Materials. The company DuPont asked the young designers Vaclav Mlynar and Jakub Pollag both from the successfull studio deFORM for cooperation on the Designblok 2013 presentation of the specific material Corian. The creative duo came with a conceptual project in which they revive modernistic pieces of furniture from the period of 30's to 60's by using the Corian. Their almost surgical work is based on replacing the most exposed elements of the furniture by brand-new Corian components. No more no less. The replaced parts are exact copies of the original pieces like ghosts reminiscent of their age. They were often used as a model to make the new form of the Corian component. Because of the neutrality and visual timelessness of the Corian the products gain completely new qualities. As it were some kind of high-tech prothesis which are replacing the old and lived out part of the furniture comparable to the work of a surgeon examining amputation followed by supplementing a new part of human body. They pour new blood into the aging furniture and this contrast is helping to highlight the specific nature of both old and new part. On one side there is the fading sometimes even 70 years old wood or metal, on the other side there is the ageless and almost immortal Corian as white as snow. It seems the time of design progress has stopped. The formal virtuosity of modernistic authors had been embedded in those perfectly simplified objects.Text: Adam Štěch
