Pebbles

‘Pebbles’ is an interactive work for the public realm outside of Dublin City University, featuring 277 individual pods. The proposal not only provides points of reference and signage identifying the main entrance to the University, but encourages passing pedestrians to congregate and play, energising an otherwise under‐utilised thoroughfare. The pebbles include: pods which enable smart phone interaction; energy displays, which change colour depending upon the energy consumption of the surrounding buildings; recycling bins, which make different sounds and colours when rubbish is thrown in; and pods which simply provide places to sit.

The location, height and density of these pod clusters are driven by the direction and regularity of passing pedestrians and vehicles, as well as sightlines.
