Penthouse Flat, Clerkenwell

A new helical staircase in a penthouse loft flat in Clerkenwell. The apparent size of the stairwell was increased by forming a cantilevered oriel window 4.5 metres high. This also serves to bring extra daylight into the flat through ten new coloured glass panels, backlit at night by external mini-spotlights.The treads of the stairs are sculpted to form ledges and landings at their edges, and are finished in an orange-terracotta Dalsouple rubber sheet with stainless steel nosings. The freeform spirit of the stairs themselves is carried through to other parts of the design: a new serpentine breakfast bar made out of Corian; a circular casing for the lower half of a steel column within the dining area; a row of fire-rated stainless steel portholes giving Zen views of the city skyline around St Paul's Cathedral; a purpose-made cherry-clad radiused cloak-cupboard door; and a 'Hot-Spring' radiator illuminated by a blue LED floor light.
