Introvert—Onyx Stone Light

Introvert explores the dichotomy between inside and outside, positive and negative space that is a recurrent feature of Middle Eastern architecture, as seen in its central courtyards with simple facades sheltering a rich, complex inside. The Jungian name of the object enhances the tension between interiority and exteriority in the design. It is a monolith composed of two counterparts: a male and female dual structure, which, if rejoined, makes a complete square section. The light is carved out of onyx stone; while its outer shell is unadorned, it breaks down into an intricate threedimensional pattern in its core, resembling the fragmented domes and ceilings of vernacular Islamic architecture. This differentiated pattern, evolving in curves of different thicknesses, modulates the lighting intensity. Introvert is a stand-alone sculpture in its own right, light adding depth and warmth to the onyx veining.
