A considered concept for a modern extension to a listed house in Kent, to provide a new kitchen/ dining area, bedrooms, bathroom and basement games room. This project is work in progress. The selected external materials emulate an interpretation of the typical Kentish vernacular barns, however the interiors provide modern, open plan living areas with large glazed areas to maximise light penetration and to break down the boundary between inside and out. The scale and form relates to the original building and provides an end stop to the overall configuration.
The extension has been carefully considered to relate to its context and setting. Vernacular external materials were chosen to reference to typical Kentish agricultural buildings, but interpreted in a modern style. The use of large glazed areas to maximise light penetration and to break down the boundary between inside and out.
