Deirdre Dyson’s 2015 carpet collection is quite a departure from recent themes. Comprising nine fresh designs, which interplay linear and graphic forms, the result is both striking and modern. Entitled “Illusion”, the new collection was shown for the first time at Maison et Objet Paris in January 2015.
Illusion collection presented my hand-knotted makers with the
most difficult challenge to date. The geometric designs may look
deceptively simple, but the intricacy of workmanship involved is
astounding. I have used colour grading
in many directions and opposing paths. The
makers, who work across the loom from left to right, row by row, have to change
colour at almost every stitch. It
requires them to think as if standing on their heads and reflects the complete
labour of love that we dedicate to these exquisite carpets! The result is a dazzling contrast from light
to dark, of shadows and optical illusions.
As always, Deirdre’s designs merely provide inspiration for clients. Each carpet is totally bespoke, so anything is possible.
Our carpets can be fitted or free-standing; produced in any shape (even circular or fish-shaped!) or size; from a palette of over 2,000 shades; using luxurious wool or a tactile combination of wool and silk. We use different production methods to suit both budget and space—working with craftspeople practiced in the ancient skill of hand-knotting, who use Chinese or Indian silk and Tibetan wool; and with hand-tufting artists in Scotland or Yorkshire, using the finest New Zealand wool. Or carpets can be produced using a pass machine, which is an affordable solution for larger (commercial) spaces.
Deirdre Dyson is proud to subscribe to GoodWeave, the international non-profit organisation working to end child labour in South Asia’s carpet industry. Goodweave works to rescue, rehabilitate, educate and provide vocational training for illegally employed child workers, to help them towards a better future.
