Contemporary bathroom in an Edwardian Period Home

Retro Metro Limehouse green tiles from Fired Earth were used in conjunction with the South Kensington white tiles above in this bathroom in an Edwardian property to create a period feel to this small family bathroom in an Edwardian property in South London. A dado rail was created with tiles, at the same height as the dado rail in the hall outside.  The fittings chosen were more contemporary creating a modern look in the period context. This small  bathroom is used by three members of the family and needed to include a shower and a bathtub so the floor to ceiling tiles allowed us to create a wet room to house a standalone shower in the corner without compromising on looks.

Plants and flowers add colour and softness into an interior and introduce natural elements such as free-form shapes and textures into otherwise hard and structured spaces. Many interior designers like to "dress" interiors with cut flowers but we prefer to use living plants so that our clients can continue to enjoy the new look, long beyond when cut blooms have gone.  Finding the right plants for the environment requires a lot of thought and much research. We have discovered that orchids thrive on a north-east facing windowsill in a warm, and occasionally steamy bathroom.

The client wanted to keep a tub in the bathroom but wasn't overly keen on a shower in the bath so the floor to ceiling tiles allowed us to create a wet room to house a standalone shower in the corner without compromising on looks. By not using a shower screen or tray there is a vast  spaciousness to the room, aided by the very high ceilings, common in Edwardian homes.

if you are going to have a clock in the bathroom, it's best to have one that doesn't work… to allow yourself to lose all sense of time… and enjoy the five minutes peace. We put this clock in the new interior because it encapsulated the sleek and contemporary with the traditional in much the same way as the bathroom itself. And we loved how it's round cheery face and bell contrasted with the linear form of the tiles.

These wall-mounted taps are wonderfully sleek and simple, and in keeping with the simplicity of the overall design. Much thought was given to the position of these taps; there were many options. We wanted to hide them from the view on entering the bathroom and seeing the bathtub under the window, but we also wanted them within easy reach of the bath The thinking behind the positioning  are hidden from view when entering the bathroom, behind the concealed tank of the toilet, but they are placed within esy reach

Being able to see a space devoid of any colour is crucial to be able to assess balance of the room, the harmony of the pieces, the proportion, the effect of light o the space. We build mood boards which show colour, fabrics, textures but when planning spaces and architecting interiors its back to basics and the fundamentals of drawing....
